One of the premier marine research institutions in the world, Mote Marine
Laboratories, are broadly involved in many areas of sea life research. Based
in Florida, their research programs include: 102 (32 Doctoral Level) Aquatic
Toxicology, Benthic Ecology, Biomedical, Chemical Ecology, Chemical Fate
and Effects, Coastal Resources, Coral Biology, Fisheries Enhancement and
Aquaculture, Human and
Ecological Health, Landscape Ecology, Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Conservation
and Research, Microbiology, Phytoplankton
Ecology, Sensory and Behavior Biology and Shark Biology.
As most of you already know, salt water is a pretty corrosive medium and
the only type of pipe that has any degree of reliability in such an environment
is PVC. With Genova's continual support to Mote Marine, our products are
being used to pipe their research labs, their aquariums, and such exciting
new projects as the aquaculture facility being built off Fruitville Road
in Sarasota.
At this new facility, among other things, Mote is attempting to domesticate
sturgeon. One of the principal products sturgeon produce is caviar, an extremely
expensive commodity worldwide because sturgeon are not particularly plentiful.
Unfortunately, an easy way to get sturgeon eggs (caviar) is to catch every
one of them available and in developing countries as well as others, the
high price of caviar acts as an incentive for local fishermen to unwittingly
destroy the species. If Mote is able to domesticate sturgeon on a large
scale (and they are well along with this), the resulting technology will
offer very exciting potential.
In Mote's constant dedication to increasing the knowledge of mankind to
live responsibly with, to better utilize, and to preserve the greatest remaining
resource the Earth has left....... the sea, it hopes to make the world a
better place. And in virtually all facets of this research, Genova pipes
and fittings are playing an important role!
